(2013) Application of multi-criteria decision making methods to compression ignition engine efficiency and gaseous, particulate and greenhouse gas emissions. For a definitive version of this work, please refer to the published source: Abstract Compression ignition (CI) engine design is subject to many constraints which presents a multi-criteria optimisation problem that the engine researcher must solve. In particular, the modern CI engine must not only be efficient, but must also deliver low gaseous, particulate and life cycle greenhouse gas emissions so that its impact on urban air quality, human health, and global warming are minimised. Consequently, this study undertakes a multi-criteria analysis which seeks to identify alternative fuels, injection technologies and combustion strategies that could potentially satisfy these CI engine design constraints. Three datasets are analysed with the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations and Geometrical Analysis for Interactive Aid (PROMETHEE-GAIA) algorithm to explore the impact of 1): an ethanol fumigation system, 2): alternative fuels (20 % biodiesel and synthetic diesel) and alternative injection technologies (mechanical direct injection and common rail injection), and 3): various biodiesel fuels made from 3 feedstocks (i.e. soy, tallow, and canola) tested at several blend percentages (20-100 %) on the resulting emissions and efficiency profile of the various test engines. The results show that moderate ethanol substitutions (~20 % by energy) at moderate load, high percentage soy blends (60-100 %), and alternative fuels (biodiesel and synthetic diesel) provide an efficiency and emissions profile that yields the most " preferred " solutions to this multi-criteria engine design problem. Further research is, however, required to reduce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) emissions with alternative fuels, and to deliver technologies that do not significantly reduce the median diameter of particle emissions.

Building a maintenance policy through a multi-criterion decision-making model

A major competitive advantage of production and service systems is establishing a proper maintenance policy. Therefore, maintenance managers should make maintenance decisions that best fit their systems. Multi-criterion decision-making methods can take into account a number of aspects associated with the competitiveness factors of a system. This paper presents a multi-criterio...

Performance Evaluation of Indian Technical Institutions Using PROMETHEE-GAIA Approach

It has now become an important issue to evaluate the performance of technical institutions to develop better research and enrich the existing teaching processes. The results of such performance appraisal would serve as a reference point for decisions to choose a particular institution, hire manpower, and provide financial support for the betterment of students and underperforming institutions. ...

An Integrated AHP-PROMETHEE Method for Selecting the most Suitable Ethylene Propylene Diene Termonomer

This paper considers the problem of selecting the most appropriate ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), which is a polyolefin with a variety of usages in different areas. The metallocene catalyst, bis(2-phenyl indenyl) zirconium dichloride ((2-PhInd)2ZrCl2) was synthesized by a modified method and applied to the terpolymerization of ethylene, propylene, and 5-ethylidiene-2-norbornene (ENB)....

Application of PROMETHEE-GAIA method for non-traditional machining processes selection

Article history: Received April 17, 2012 Accepted 11 June 2012 Available online June 12 2012 With ever increasing demand for manufactured products of hard alloys and metals with high surface finish and complex shape geometry, more interest is now being paid to non-traditional machining (NTM) processes, where energy in its direct form is used to remove material from workpiece surface. Compared t...

On the usefulness of taking the weights into account in the GAIA visualisations

In this paper we study the multicriteria decision aid (MCDA) methods PROMETHEE and GAIA. The PROMETHEE method provides the decision maker with a ranking. The GAIA method provides a two dimensional representation of the decision problem based on the flows computed by the PROMETHEE method. However, a limit of the GAIA method is the loss of information by its two-dimensional projection which may l...
